COVID-19 Has Peaked: What Business Leaders Should Do Next

Early indications are that COVID-19 has peaked or is approaching peak around parts of the United States.  Now what?

Now or within the next few weeks would be a good time to spend 90 minutes to review what happened with your team.  Why?  First, this meeting can be used to show your appreciation for what they did during the crisis.  Second, in the event there is a second wave of COVID-19, the meeting can be used to document what steps you took while it is still fresh in everyone’s mind.  This is critical as Dr. Fauci at a White House briefing said he anticipates the coronavirus will have another wave later in 2020.

With that in mind, below is a potential COVID-19 Response Debrief agenda:

  • Recognition for those who were impacted and acknowledgement of team accomplishments
  • Review meeting goal: Create a document to be used in the event of a second wave of COVID-19.  List work performed, what worked, what didn’t, improvements, and next steps
  • Identify a scribe to capture key learnings and next steps
  • Review past performance
    • Brainstorm on post-its (virtual or real): What work was done to get to this point in the crisis?
    • Place the post-its in chronological order.  Identify any major milestones in timeline
    • What worked well?
    • What didn’t work well?
  • Identify improvements and next steps
    • Brainstorm: What improvements could be made to be more effective?
    • Discuss improvements that were brainstormed.  Prioritize improvements
    • Identify next steps, such as:

Hopefully the document that is developed out of this meeting will never be needed.  However, in case it is needed, your response to a second wave should be significantly improved.
